Depending on the needs of the child and based on data collected through observation, interviews, developmental history, and screenings, the professional support offered through consultation and/or direct service for the young child may target the following developmental social competencies based on the CASEL Framework (Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning) focused on skills for the young child. Some examples are:
begin peer interactions while managing emotional arousal;
initiate prosocial behaviors and interactions with peers;
stay connected with adults;
understand basic emotional expressions, situations, and experiences and ways to manage them (often with adult support);
show some early efforts to solve interpersonal problems;
begin to follow social rules such as turn-taking and cooperative play.
